The war memorial consists of a freestanding pedestal with stepped base. Surmounting the pedestal is a carved granite statue of a solider standing at ease with rifle, bonnet and pack. The memorial is located within a walled enclosure beside the A76 on Main Street, Kirkconnel, Sanquhar. Access to the memorial is through a gate in the roadside.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £3,375 for the like-for-like replacement of the surrounding hard landscaping which had deteriorated becoming cracked and uneven. Work was also undertaken to locally repair the existing brick foundations which had failed and caused movement in the base structure of the memorial.
Designed by Scott and Rae of Glasgow the memorial was erected and dedicated in July 1920. The estimated cost of the memorial in February 1919 was £550.
On the front elevation of the memorial there is a dedication panel to those who fell in the First World War and on the other elevations plaques record the 84 names of those who fell in the First World War. On the base of the memorial there is a further panel which records 17 names of those who fell in the Second World War.
The First World War inscription reads:
“1914 - 1918
In honoured memory of
the men of this parish
who laid down their lives
in the Great War
Their name liveth for evermore”
