Benson war memorial after work © WMT, 2008Benson war memorial stands in Castle Square in the village in Oxfordshire. A Cornish granite Celtic wheel cross stands atop a plinth with a three-stepped base. Hand painted incised inscriptions are on the shaft and plinth. The memorial is within the Benson conservation area.

In 2005, a Small Grants Scheme award of £250 contributed towards cleaning the memorial with water and soft bristle brushes, repainting the lettering and building a row of kerbing to protect the war memorial. Some damage had been caused by HGVs mounting the kerb. So the additional kerbing was designed to add a level of protection between vehicles mounting the kerb and the war memorial.

This war memorial received a further grant of £520 towards conservation works from War Memorials Trust in 2018. The memorial was cleaned using natural bristle brushes, a chemically neutral soap and low pressure water.

The memorial was erected in 1919, paid for through public subscription. Details of the Second World War were added after that conflict.
