The memorial hall after grant works © Terry Brown, 2014The sandstone constructed Hopeman Memorial Hall is located on Farquhar Street, Hopeman. On the front elevation of the building are two separate memorial plaques. The plaque above the main entrance doors commemorates the erection of the hall and those who sacrificed their lives in the First World War and the granite tablet attached to the main gable has a roll of honour for both the First and Second World War.

In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £4,190 for the replacement of the existing timber flooring within the main hall which was in poor condition, due to wear and tear. The new timber floor has allowed for the continual use, of this much used hall, by local groups and members of the community who enjoy taking part in an extensive range of activities.

On inspection of the roof it was clear that a number of roof repairs were required to stop the problem and to prevent similar damage in other areas of the hall.  Essential repair works to the memorials hall roof and rainwater gutters and downpipes was carried out. Defective pointing and stone work repairs at roof level were undertaken. In addition missing or damage slates, flashing and rain water downpipes were installed. Like for like replacement were also be undertaken to the damaged flat roofing.

Designed by Architect, Mr Alister Morrison, Hopeman Memorial Hall was opened on the 12th September 1925 by Lord Forres. The hall was constructed solely from donations by local people to be a permanent memorial to the many men of the village who lost their lives in the First World War. As such it continues to hold a special place in the hearts of the residents of Hopeman.

In addition to the grant funded work to replace the flooring of the hall, work has recently been undertaken to the plaque above the main entrance door. Some areas of the lettering has become eroded and as such localised sharpening of the incised lettering was undertaken by hand and the inscription was re-painted to improve the legibility.

The inscription reads:

“Erected
to the memory of
the Hopeman men
who made the
supreme sacrifice in the Great War
1914-1918”
