This war memorial consists of a floriated sandstone cross surmounting a long slender stone column, with a carved collar at the top of the shaft and three carved figures around the base of the shaft of a female angel, St George and St Michael. The memorial has a decorative plinth with a shield of stone St George carved in relief, and bronze plaques dedicated to the men of the Parish who have lost their lives. On the base is carved lettering in relief. The war memorial stands within the churchyard of St Mary’s Priory Church, Tutbury.
In 2014, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,926 towards the production of a condition report, structural survey to include suggested reasons for the lean of the cross and the recommended conservation works to correct this lean.
Following assessment of the report a further application as made resulting in a 2015 Grant Offer. Having a clear picture of what was needed helped the applicants obtain comparable quotes/tenders. Repair and conservation works were completed in time for Remembrance Day that year with a grant paid of £7,630.
The war memorial was erected by public subscription and was dedicated by the Bishop of Stafford on Sunday 2nd May 1920. It was unveiled by Major H.L. Newton, DSO.
In 1948, an extra bronze plaque with the names of the 13 Fallen from World War II.
The inscription in relief reads:
In grateful memory of
Tutbury men
who gave their lives in their
Country's defence in the
Great War 1914-1919
Greater love hath no man
than this that a man lay down
his life for his friends.
