The war memorial consists of a tapering column topped by a draped urn. On the column are the names the men of the Parish who dies in World War I and World War II, set in lead. The memorial stands on Main Street, Northallerton, North Yorkshire.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,191 towards conservation works to the memorial. This included cleaning the memorial using a steam cleaning system, raking out loose and defective mortar from the joints and re-pointing using a non-cementitious lime mortar, with the cracks on the stone also being filled with a colour matched lime mortar. Finally all loose lead lettering was re-fixed and a patination oil was applied. SmartWater solution was applied to the lead lettering as part of the InMemoriam2014 project, where SmartWater solution is offered free of charge to war memorial custodians.
The memorial was erected by the Parishioners of North and South Cowton and was unveiled and dedicated by local Clergy and Dignitaries on 17th July 1921.
The dedicatory inscription reads:
To the glory of God
And
in grateful memory of
the following
who gallantly died
in the Great War
1914 – 1918
1939 – 1945
Erected by the Parishioners of
North and South Cowton
