Bishampton war memorial © Bishampton History Society, 2013This war memorial consists of a Latin cross atop of a slender shaft which stands on a hexagonal plinth and a three stepped base. The memorial is made of sandstone and is located on a grassed area at the junction of Main Street and Broad Lane in Bishampton. The lettering is in relief on the plinth and is dedicated to the men of the Parish who died and served during World War I and World War II.

In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,425 towards cleaning using low pressure steam cleaning, re-pointing of all of the joints using a natural hydraulic lime mortar and sand mix. Some plastic repairs were undertaken to the plinth and areas of damage to the lettering were repaired locally using small stone inserts which were pinned in place using stainless steel dowels. The fractured collar was reinforced using stainless steel pins at an angle to ensure that the cross was secure.

Bishampton war memorial © Bishampton History Society, 2013The memorial was erected by public subscription, which was collected door to door by Fladbury branch of Royal British Legion. The remaining funds were raised by a series of Whist Drives and Dances which were organised by the Ladies’ War Memorial Fund Raising Committee, which was set up specially for the cause.

The memorial was constructed and erected by Mr F Taylor of Inkberrow at a cost of £74 3s 0d and was unveiled by General Sir Francis Davies on 26th July 1931. The Deed of Gift for the land on which the memorial stands was issued by Mr William Kennard Wheeler to the Parish Council and is dated 5th August 1931.
