This war memorial consists of a tapering arch pillar surmounted by an urn, mounted on a three tired plinth and a single stepped base, all constructed of grey granite. The names and dedication to the men of Kirk Smeaton who died whilst serving during World War I and World War II are incised on the faces of the plinth. A decorative foliate design is also incised into the plinth and the pillar.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £537 towards conservation of the war memorial. This consisted of cleaning the war memorial using warm water and a non-metallic bristle brush then re-painting of the incised and lead lettering using an oil based paint. The joints were raked out and re-pointed using a lime putty and finally 2 additional names were added to the memorial in the same font and style as the incised inscriptions.
The dedication on the war memorial reads:
This monument is erected
to the glory of God
and in grateful remembrance of the
Men of this parish
who in the
Great War
sacrificed their own lives
that we might live in freedom
also of these who gave their lives in the Second World War
