This war memorial consists of a decorative cross set on a tapering shaft and hexagonal plinth and steps all constructed of a Cornish granite. The whole is set on a paved surround with steps. Bronze and lead plaques are attached to the face of the plinths and steps with the names and dedications to the men of Sanderstead who lost their lives fighting in World War I and World War II.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £900 towards the creation and reinstatement of two replica bronze plaques to the same size, design, profile, materials as the original missing plaques and for the engraving of the names in the same style and font as original. The plaques had been stolen from the
memorial in 2011 but luckily the PCC had recorded the inscriptions which allowed for the recreation of these plaques with accurate details. The works also included patination of the new plaques and application of a protective wax coating to all of the plaques and fixing of the two plaques to the memorial using non-ferrous anti theft fixings and to secure the existing two plaques using anti-theft fixings.
The memorial was unveiled on 15th May 1920 by Air Commodore J B Hearson and was rededicated after World War II on 09th November 1947 by Bishop Suffragan of Croydon.
The inscription reads:
All ye
who pass by

with gratitude
the men of
this place
who went forth
to fight for
God and Country
the names
of those who
returned not
again are hereon
inscribed
RIP
