The war memorial in the small Suffolk seaside town of Orford is a 10 ft high wheel cross of rough De Lank Cornish granite on a plinth on a very shallow square base. It stands in the churchyard of St. Bartholomew’s. There is raised enamelled lettering on two sides of the plinth and a crusader’s sword is sculpted in relief on the shaft of the cross.
In September 2005 War Memorials Trust made a grant of £250 towards work to clean the memorial, replace missing lettering and to re-enamel all lettering.
The two dedications on the plinths read
In loving grateful memory of
the Orford men
who gave their lives in
the Great War 1914 – 1918
“Their name liveth for evermore”
and
Remember before God
those whose lives
have been sacrificed in
the war 1939 – 1945
Death is swallowed up in victory 1 Cor.15
Names of the fallen are recorded on the plinths.
The memorial was built by G. Maile & Son of Euston Road, Londonand engraved by the firm of Albert C. Stephenson. It was unveiled on 31st October 1920 by Col. Eaton White. It was rededicated on 2nd July 1950 after the names of the fallen of World War II had been added.
