Small Grants Scheme in Scotland
This scheme is administered by the Trust and is primarily supported by funding provided by Historic Scotland as well as the Trust’s own fundraising. Below is an outline of the key information relating to the scheme, but please see the ‘Guidance Notes’ for detailed information on all aspects of making an application and eligible works.
Eligible memorials:
- Freestanding war memorials in Scotland with no other functional purpose than as a war memorial (for example plaques, bridges, memorial halls and gardens are ineligible)
Deadlines:
- There are no set deadlines. Applications are regularly assessed throughout the year
Amount of funding available:
- Up to a maximum of 75% of eligible costs, up to a maximum grant of £7,500
Key requirements:
- If the applicant is not responsible for the memorial, written permission must be supplied from the owner consenting to the works
- Any additional permissions required, such as Listed Building Consent, must be obtained before commencement
- Two quotes are required for an application to this scheme
Examples of eligible works:
- Urgent and necessary repairs to the fabric of the war memorial including works of structural stabilisation
- Works to improve the legibility of eroded inscriptions
- Cleaning, under certain circumstances
- Fees of a conservation accredited professional adviser
- Reinstatement of lost elements which are important to recover the design integrity of the memorial and only when supported by historical evidence
Examples of ineligible works:
- Maintenance
- New war memorials
- Graves of any type
- Relocation
- Inappropriate methods or materials
- Additions or alterations to the original design of the memorial
- Addition of names
- Work which has already started or been completed
Applying:
- If you are interested in applying to this scheme, you must first complete a ‘Grants Expression of interest’ form
- If your project is eligible then you will be sent the appropriate application documents
- Please ensure you allow adequate time to submit a ‘Grants Expression of interest’ form and receive a decision on this, as well as making a formal application if you have specific timeframes in mind
