Welsh Newton and Llanrothal war memorial is located near St Mary’s Church on the junction of the A466 and Hangrove Road, Welsh Newton. The memorial is a sandstone Latin cross on a two-stepped square base. The inscriptions are incised on the top step and commemorate those killed in both World Wars. The memorial is Grade II listed.
In 2010 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £207 towards conservation and repair works to the memorial. These works included cleaning the memorial with natural bristle brushes and water as well as wooden spatulas to remove moss and lichen to improve the legibility of the inscriptions and defective joints were raked out by hand and re-pointed in lime mortar.
The memorial is made of stone from Buckholt Quarry and funded by public subscription. The memorial was sculpted and installed by Mr Arthur Hall of Monmouth. The memorial was dedicated on 11th November 1920 and this was reported in the 12th November 1920 edition of the Monmouth Beacon.
The inscriptions on the memorial read:
“To the glory of God and in memory of those
who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918
This cross is erected by the parishioners of Welsh Newton and Llanrothal
R.I.P.
Wallace Palmer.
David Emanuel Pritchard.
William Harold Dobbs.”
