This war memorial is a marble obelisk on a two tiered plinth. The base has angled projections at each corner and the inscriptions are made from flush lead letters. The whole memorial is surrounded by paving. Originally the war memorial contained no mortar between sections and the weight of the marble held it together!
The obelisk is located outside St John’s Church in the High Street, Chase Terrace, Burntwood, Staffordshire.
The memorial has received multiple grants and the summary details of this record relate to the most recent grant.
The main issue with the memorial was that the marble had become cracked in several sections due to movement caused by subsidence of the site. In addition, it was suspected that the memorial had been constructed using iron cramps to fix the sections together. Rust can expand metal by up to 4 times its original size, making cracks widen. Since the memorial had to taken apart to repair the cracks it was also a good opportunity to replace the cramps with stainless steel. A grant of £2,950 was given through the Grants for War Memorials scheme.
As the memorial was in an inconvenient position in front of the church door and on land which was subsiding, it was decided to relocate the memorial a few metres to the side. Once reconstructed on the new site, the landscape was paved to provide a space for services. A grant of £1,082 was given through the Small Grants Scheme for this work.
It is not known exactly when the memorial was unveiled. The memorial is dedicated to those who lost their lives from Chase Terrace and Boney Hay in World War I and II.
