The war memorial in the Staffordshire village of Abbots Bromley is a local Hollington stone St Chad’s cross on a tapering pillar on a square plinth and a base. Underneath the cross, at the top of the pillar, are gables and around the faces of the plinth, which has indents either side of each corner, are inlaid slate tablets with gilded lettering recording a dedication and the names of the fallen of World War I. The corners of the plinth are decorated with slim shallow-recessed Gothic panels. At the bottom of one face of the pillar a plaque has been added with the dates of World War II and on other faces are plaques recording the names of the fallen men of that conflict. The memorial is surrounded by an oak post and chain fence and stands on a tarmaced area on the Market Place next to the road through the village.
In 2001/2 English Heritage made an offer of £2,035 towards work to clean the memorial with the DOFF cleaning system and re-point the memorial and re-gild the lower name panels. The grant was also to replace the oak posts and chain to match the existing and to lay a new tarmac area within the posts.
The dedication on the memorial reads:
"To the eternal
memory of the men
of Abbots Bromley
whose names are
inscribed hereon
who gave their
lives for England
in the Great War and
of all those others
from this parish who
fought under the
flag during the
same period 1914 – 1919"
The memorial was dedicated twice; once on 5th June 1920 by the congregation of the Catholic church and again on 24th June by the Bishop of Lichfield for the Church of England congregation. It was designed by Frederick Mercer and built by Messrs Bridgeman and Co of Lichfield.
