The war memorial in the village of East Markham, on the eastern edge of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, is a grey granite column on a tapering triple plinth, standing on a three-stepped base faced with rough stone. The memorial is unusual because the top of the column was broken off deliberately, to signify broken lives. The broken piece of the column was then placed in front of the memorial at the bottom of the steps. The memorial is surrounded by a flower bed and post and chain fencing. On two faces of the memorial are recorded the dedication and lists of names of the fallen in raised lead lettering; the lettering of the dedications are painted red and the names of the fallen painted black. The memorial stands on a triangular green on the High Street in the middle of the village.
In 2001/2 English Heritage offered a grant of £395 towards work to clean the memorial of organic growth using water, supplemented by bristle brushes and a little detergent if necessary. The joints were re-pointed using a lime mortar mix, missing letters replaced to match the originals and loose letters re-fixed. The enamel was removed from the existing letters and re-painted.
The dedication on the front face of the memorial reads:
"This monument is erected
to the glory of God and
in grateful memory of
those from this parish who
fell in the Great War
1914 – 1918"
The names are listed below this, and on the middle course of the triple plinth are the words:
"Erected by Henry Cowlishaw Esq.
of this parish"
On the side of the memorial the dedication to the fallen of wars since 1918 have been added:
"Also
in grateful memory of
those who gave their lives
in the world war
1939 – 1945
Korea 1953"
