The war memorial in the Buckinghamshire town of Iver is an unusual limestone cross on a pillar, standiIver war memorial © Iver Parish Council 2015ng on a double plinth and a three-stepped octagonal base. The cross has equal length short arms each ending in a convex curve. In the centre of the cross is an elaborately floriated cross within an octagon, and the arms of the cross have a sunburst-style pattern within them, emanating from the centre. The shaft of the cross is decorated within a long recessed panel and stands on a double plinth. The lower section of the plinth has inscribed slate panels on all four faces, and the higher section a smaller plinth on one face. The memorial stands in the churchyard of St Peter’s on Thorney Lane North.

In February 2002 English Heritage offered a grant of £2908 towards work to clean the memorial using biocide, low pressure water and natural bristle brushes, to remove earlier failed repairs and replace them with indents of matching stone, to re-point open joints, to clean and re-patinate the slate inscription panels, to apply a shelter coat and to repair the paving surrounding the memorial.

In 2015 a grant of £810 was offered through the War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards cleaning and re-pointing. The memorial was cleaned using low pressure steam cleaning. The joints were re-pointed using a lime mortar and previous inappropriate repairs were removed and instead consolidated using a lime mortar.WM1283 Iver war memorial cross © Chris Leach, 2012
