The war memorial in the Leicestershire village of Ratby takes the form of a Carrara marble sculpture of Winged Victory, standing on the top of a pillar which sits on a plinth and a two-stepped base. The figure’s right arm is raised and in her left she holds a garland. On the front of the pillar the dedication and a list of the names of the men who fell in World War I are recorded in lead lettering. The names of the fallen of World War II are recorded on the side of the pillar and on the plinth is a further inscription. The memorial stands on the Main Street, outside the Primary School, behind decorative iron railings. The area around the memorial is covered with stone chippings.
In March 2003 English Heritage offered a grant of £1290 towards work to clean, repair and re-point the stonework, to add stone chippings around the base of the memorial and to prepare and re-paint the railings.
The dedication on the front of the memorial reads
1914 – 1918
In memory of the men
of Ratby who gave their
lives in the Great War
Their names liveth for ever
And the inscription on the plinth reads
“Greater love hath no man”
Unveiled by Field Marshal the Earl Haig CCB OM GCVO
Nov 13th 1920
The memorial was designed and made by Shirley Ward, a Leicester based monumental mason.
