Pittville war memorial © WMT, 2005The war memorial in Pittville, Cheltenham, is a calvary, consisting of a gabled crucifix with two freestanding female sculptures at the base of the cross. All the figures are carved from Box Ground limestone. The shaft of the cross is carved with square floriate reliefs and beneath the feet of Christ is a shield carved with crown, below which are the letters IHS. The cross and figures stand on a Cheltenham stone plinth which has floriate squares carved around the top. The plinth is rectangular, the two short faces being slightly angled to provide two wings at each end, on which are carved the names of the fallen. There are inscriptions on the front face and back faces of the plinth. The memorial stands in the churchyard of All Saint’s on All Saints Villas Road, fenced in by a small wall, iron railings and a low hedge. It is Grade II listed.

In 2003/4 English Heritage offered a grant of £2,952 towards comprehensive conservation work. A condition survey was carried out and then work was done to clean and consolidate the inscriptions, to clean the stonework with water and light brushing, to repair the stones with lime mortar and to coat the friable stone in limewater and a shelter coat, to replace the corroded ironwork, to treat the sound ironwork with rust inhibitor and to prepare a record of the work carried out, including recommendations for future maintenance.

The dedication on the front of the memorial reads:

"To the glory of God
and in loving memory
of those connected with
this parish who made
the supreme sacrifice
for their country in
the Great War 1914 - 1919"

On the back of the memorial is the inscription:

"Grant them O Lord
eternal rest and
let light perpetual
shine upon them"

The memorial was dedicated in June 1920 by the bishop of Gloucester. It was designed by John Coates-Carter and built by R L Boulton and Sons.
