The war memorial in Winwick, Northamptonshire, is unusual in that it is a shelter with a stone seat either side of it and a drinking fountain inside. The structure is made of brick with a York stone floor, and the shelter has a roof of Collyweston slates. It is situated by the crossroads in the centre of the village.
The shelter was in a bad state of repair and the seats and walls outside were overgrown so in January 2005 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation offered a grant of £2075 towards work to re-point all open joints on the slate roof and replace all missing or damaged slate undercloak, to repair plaster on the ceiling and to re-paint the ceiling, to rake out and re-point the failing joints on the walls of the shelter, to rebuild the adjoining walls where necessary and to re-point the rest, to re-lay the stone floor and to replace the stones in front of the shelter with reclaimed York flagstones.
A stone tablet inside the shelter, above the fountain mechanism, reads
In memory of
those who gave
their lives in
the Great War
Little is known about the history of the shelter, apart from the fact it was being planned in 1921.
