Rippingale war memorial © WMT, 2000The war memorial in the village of Rippingale in southern Lincolnshire, on the edge of the Fens, is a limestone gable crucifix with tracery between the arms of the cross. The cross stands on a moulded cap above a pillar on a plinth and a shallow two-stepped base. The monument stands on a large square stone block. A dedication is inscribed on the front face of the plinth and names of the fallen on two sides underneath floriate decoration. On the fourth side of the plinth are inscribed the dates of World War II and the name of the fallen man of that conflict. The memorial is in the churchyard of St Andrew’s on the High Street.

The quinquennial survey reported that various parts of the stonework were frost damaged and that the cross leaned. An engineer confirmed that the structure was not unstable, but in 2005/6 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation offered a grant of £1,180 towards work to clean the memorial, rake or cut out defective joints and re-point them using lime mortar, replace sections of damaged stone with Clipsham stone or fill in pitting to upper surfaces of stone with lime mortar and to re-paint the incised text.

The memorial was dedicated in 1920.

The World War I dedication reads:

"To the glory
of God and in
honoured memory of all those
who served their country in
the Great War 1914 – 1918
especially of those who fell
whose names are here inscribed"

and the names commemorated are:

"Arthur Hill
George Hill
Frank Kimp
Frederick Daff Pollard
John William Sandall
Walter Sandall
Charles Sharpe
Walter Scarborough
Arthur Thompson"

and from World War II:

"A.E. Sandall"
