The memorial in the village of Leighton Bromswold in the west of Cambridgeshire is a Portland stone cross on an octagonal limestone block plinth and shallow base of Ketton stone which is quarried in the adjoining county of Rutland. The four right angle corners around the centre of the cross have tracery-like carving across them. The top section of the plinth has a frieze of regular spaced and carved flower motifs and the four narrower “corner panels” of the plinth are shaped into recesses, into each of which is carved a flower to match those on the frieze. The names of eight fallen World War I soldiers are inscribed on the base underneath the dedication. The lettering is incised and painted black. The memorial is set in a paved area on the main road through Leighton Bromswold (The Avenue) and is surrounded by a low post and chain fence.
In 2007/8 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation offered £875 towards work to clean the memorial and apply biocide, to replace previous cement repairs with new lime mix and to carry out new small repairs with this lime mix, to re-point the memorial where necessary, to deepen and re-paint letters where necessary, to give the memorial a shelter coating, to treat the timber posts of the surrounding fence with linseed oil, to repair the damaged post and to clean and re-paint the chains. In addition the paving slabs surrounding the memorial were re-laid and a broken slab pinned and re-laid.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
