Paddington war memorial © WMT, 2001The war memorial Calvary stands outside the Church of St Mary Magdalene on Rowington Close in Paddington. The cross is made of wood with a wooden roof. The Christ figure and base are constructed of stone. The memorial commemorates victims of the First World War.

In 2001 War Memorials Trust contributed £500 towards a project to stabilise the memorial to ensure its survival.

In August 2015 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £530 towards a condition survey to establish the level of works required to the memorial. The structural stability of the memorial was deemed uncertain and in order to advance the project this process was considered essential before further conservation works could be considered.

In October 2015 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £3,820 towards the undertaking of emergency works to dismantle the war memorial following the publication of the condition survey which indicated the structure was structurally unsound.

This war memorial received a further grant of £36,100 towards conservation works from War Memorials Trust in 2019. Following the emergency dismantling of the memorial in 2015/16 the memorial was taken to a conservator workshop where it was carefully cleaned and repaired including the re-gilding of the Christ figure to its original design. The memorial was carefully re-erected with works which included the construction of new beam, support, and plinth, and the rebuilding of supporting wall and piers.

The memorial is the work of Martin Travers (1886 – 1948) who was an architect who worked on war memorials after both the First and Second World Wars. He was known primarily for church furnishings and stained glass painting.

The inscription on the memorial reads:

1914-1918
INFINITUM EST
