Wootton WWII war memorial clock © St Peter Wootton PCC, 2007The memorial to the men of Wootton in Oxfordshire who lost their lives in the Second World War was an electric winding mechanism for the church clock of the parish church of St. Peter’s. The church clock is therefore designated as a war memorial, and this is explained on a wooden board which bears the words:

This tablet and the
church clock were erect-
ed in grateful memory
of the men from this
parish who gave their
lives in the World War
1939 – 1945
May they rest in peace

Wootton WWII war memorial plaque © Malcolm Thomas, 2010In November 2007 War Memorials Trust gave £1635 towards the cost of installing a new master clock unit to control the hour strike and summer/ winter time changes and for the upkeep of the clock. The original mechanism needed physical intervention to alter the clock, and access was difficult and dangerous. Therefore a new master clock unit was installed which could be used remotely. The clock’s bearings were cleaned and the dial and the hands stripped, repainted and gilded.

The original mechanism was installed within the existing church tower in 1947, and the money was raised by public subscription.
