WM1437 Petersfield before works © Petersfield Town Council, 2017This Portland limestone memorial comprises a pedestal with a moulded plinth and cornice, above which there is an aedicule on each side with a broken segmental pediment, thin panelled pilasters and an eared architrave to an inscribed panel which carry the names of the fallen of World War I. The memorial is surmounted by a large baluster-like finial with a torch of remembrance. Bronze plaques carry the names of the fallen of later conflicts. The memorial is located in Petersfield town centre.

In 2018, the Grants for War Memorials scheme, supported by the First World War Memorials Programme and Historic England, awarded a grant of £3,860 towards conservation works to clean the memorial using steam. In addition, loose and defective mortar was carefully raked-out from the memorial’s construction joints which were then re-pointed using a lime mortar. Damaged areas of stonework were repaired using lime mortar to rebuild the original detail and profile of the stone with larger areas of damaged stone cut out and indented using stone to match the existing fabric. The original bronze plaques for World War II and later conflicts were replaced as over time further names had been added to them in a very ad hoc fashion compromising their integrity and additional names now needed to be included so it was deemed appropriate in this case to commission new plaques.

WM1437 Petersfield after works © Petersfield Town Council, 2018In 1919, it was planned that Petersfield's memorial to the fallen of World War I should be erected in the town square, however in 1922 it was instead erected in its present position at the Eastern end of the High Street. It was designed by Inigo Triggs of Unsworth Triggs and Goulder who had travelled and studied in Italy and was inspired by the blank panels of the tombs of Giuliano de ‘Medici and Lorenzo de' Medici, designed by Michelangelo. The memorial was carved and erected by Andrew Perryman, mason of Dragon Street in 1922.
