The war memorial consists of granite obelisk wih carved fleur-de-lys surmounting a square plan plinth with pink granite columns and cornice. The plinth which commemorates the First World War is raised off the ground on a three tiered base with rectangular plaque commemorating the Second World War. The memorial is enclosed on three sides with a stone constructed wall and sits on the roadside overlooking the Bay of Pierowall.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £894 for repair and conservation work. Over time the painted inscription on the memorial has worn away and is making the existing inscription more difficult to read. To address this issue the memorial was appropriately cleaned and the inscriptions were re-painted.
The Pierowall war memorial was unveiled on Sunday 18 September 1921. It was funded by members of the public after an appeal for funds in the Orkney Herald Newspaper in 1919.
