East Brent war memorial is located at the junction of Western Road and Old Bristol Road. The memorial is formed of a three stepped base, two-tiered plinth and tapering octagonal stone column surmounted by a cross. Four figure sculptures stand on the lower plinth level with the upper plinth, and corner columns join the lower plinth and the first step. The inscriptions are incised in the lower plinth and painted black and commemorate the fallen of the First World War, Second World War and the Korean War. The war memorial is Grade II listed.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £282 towards cleaning and re-pointing the memorial. The memorial was steam cleaned and open and damaged joints were re-pointed using an appropriate lime mortar.
In 2021 a grant of £1,050 from War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme assisted with the cost of a structural report following observations that the memorial was ‘leaning’ after the removal of neighbouring vegetation. In addition to lean measurements, slit trenches were dug and soil samples were taken for analysis. The resulting report identified expansion and subsequent shrinkage of the clay soils on which the memorial is constructed and proposed further monitoring.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
“To the glory of God
and in proud and grateful
memory
of the following soldiers
from or connected with
this parish
who gave their lives
for their country
in the Great War
1914-1918.
Ye that live on mid
English pastures green
remember us and think
what might have been.
