This war memorial consists of a Latin cross with a bronze sword of sacrifice on the tapering column which is a top of a three tiered base and steps, all constructed of Portland Stone. The base of the memorial is incised and painted with a dedication and the names of the men of Great Gaddesden who have lost their lives during World War I and World War II. The memorial stands in the churchyard of St John the Baptist.
In 2013, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £853 towards cleaning of the memorial, which was heavily colonised with algae and organic growth, re-pointing of the joints and cleaning and treatment of the bronze sword. The stone and the bronze were cleaned using a steam cleaning system and the joints were raked out to a sufficient depth and re-pointed using a lime mortar and sand mix. The bronze sword was re-patinated and was protected using a microcrystalline wax.
The war memorial was constructed around 1920 by Sir Reginald Blomfield.
