Special grants

From time to time War Memorials Trust offers grants outside the scope of its main grant schemes. These can be special grant schemes set up by the Trust to commemorate individuals or celebrate events or one off grants for a particular project. 

Examples of some of these grants are detailed below.

David Graves Memorial Grant

(2002-2007)

The David Graves Memorial grant was established in 2002 when a £10,000 fund originated from donations in response to an article published in The Daily Telegraph. The journalist who prepared this article was David Graves who sadly died in a diving accident the week after publication.

WMT used the donations raised from this article to award an annual grant of £2,000 for a period of 5 years. The following war memorials received a grant:

  • War memorial wall painting, St Luke's Junior School, Brighton (WM1766)
  • The Sundowner, Royal Harbour, Ramsgate, Kent (WM1493)
  • War memorial tank, St Georges Square, Ashford, Kent (WM1554)
  • Group of four war memorial seats, High Lane, Cropton, North Yorkshire (WM1868) 
  • War memorial located in St Chad’s Church in Kirkby (WM906)

Sir Donald Thompson Memorial Grant (2006)

The Sir Donald Thompson Memorial Grant was awarded in 2006 in memory of War Memorials Trust's Director General from the founding of the charity in 1997 thorugh to his death in March 2005. A grant of £7,285 was awarded to assist with the conservation of 19 war memorials in Calderdale (West Yorkshire), the area where Sir Donald lived and worked as an MP.

Anniversary Appeal (2005)

This special grant was awarded in 2005 to celebrate the 60 years of the end of World War II. A grant of £8,521 (fundraised by War Memorials Trust through a special appeal) was awarded to assist with the repair of the St Chad’s war memorial in Kirkby, Merseyside.
