War Memorials Trust held or attended a number of events in 2011.  Details can be found below:

7th December 2011 Talk by Gavin Stamp to Trust members, London

Gavin Stamp talk to Trust members © WMT, 2011Architectural historian and Trustee of War Memorials Trust Dr Gavin Stamp gave a talk about the architecture of the Great War cemeteries and the war memorials of the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in the UK and overseas.

It was a fascinating talk demonstrating the vast diversity of war memorial design and the sheer scale of the building which took place to provide appropriate places of remembrance for the large number of casualties from the First World War.

This was a joint event between the Trust and the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (PMSA) with members from both of the organisations invited to attend.

14th November 2011 Talk to St Basil's Church group, Tyne and Wear

A talk to St James' and St Basil's Church group in Newcatle-upon-Tyne about the work of War Memorials Trust was given by Regional Volunteer Janet Brown.

14th November 2011 Talk to Halifax Civic Society, West Yorkshire 

A talk to Halifax Civic Society was given by Regional Volunteer Anne Brook.

13th November 2011 Rededication of New Abbey United Free Church memorial, Dumfries

Regional Volunteer Paul Goodwin attended the rededication of the New Abbey United Free Church memorial at New Abbey.

13th November 2011 BBC Radio 4 charity appeal

Lance Corporal Matt Croucher GC at BBC Radio 4 appeal recording © WMT, 2011War Memorials Trust’s BBC Radio 4 charity appeal was broadcast on Sunday 13th November. Lance Corporal Matt Croucher GC, who served in recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, kindly agreed to present the appeal on behalf of the charity.

During the appeal, Matt explained the continuing significance of war memorials as records of the brave acts of individuals in conflicts past and present. He also spoke about the importance of the preservation of our war memorials as places of remembrance and reflection.

1st November 2011 Talk to Durham Family History Society, County Durham 

A talk to the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society was given by Regional Volunteer James Pasby.

29th October 2011 Talk at North West Family History Fair, Manchester 

A talk on 'War memorials in danger' was given by Regional Volunteer Mike Coyle at the North West Family History Fair in Manchester.

26th October 2011 Talk to Blofield Ladies Group, Norfolk 

A talk to Blofield Ladies Group was given by Regional Volunteers Jim and June Marriage.

23rd October 2011 Rededication of Skelton-on-Ure war memorial, North Yorkshire 

Regional Volunteer Anne Brook attended the rededication of the Skelton-on-Ure war memorial on behalf of War Memorials Trust.

15th October 2011 Display at Western Front Association regional seminar, Buckinghamshire  

War Memorials Trust information was displayed at the Western Front Association Milton Keynes branch regional seminar.

14th-16th October 2011 Display at Whitby Wartime Weekend, North Yorkshire

A display of Trust information at the Whitby Wartime Weekend was organised by Regional Volunteer Richard Thackrah.

10th October 2011 In Memoriam 2014 reception, London

In Memoriam 2014 reception October 2011 © www.paulpickard.com courtsey of The SmartWater Foundation, 2011War Memorials Trust Trustee Meg Hillier MP hosted a reception in the Macmillan Room for members of both the House of Commons and House of Lords.  Designed to provide them with information about the In Memoriam 2014 project it was an opportunity to raise awareness and seek their assistance in promoting In Memoriam 2014 in constituencies and communities. Around 35 members of both Houses attended and they joined guests who included Lance Corporal Matt Croucher GC, representatives of the Royal Hospital, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Imperial War Museum. Guests enjoyed performances from members of a Cadet band.

A talk about war memorials and the work of War Memorials Trust to the Isle of Wight Interest Group was given by Regional Volunteer Geoff Allan.

A display of War Memorials Trust information at the Wheatley Hill History Day was organised by Regional Volunteer James Pasby.

20th September 2011 Talk to Gosforth Golf Club, Tyne and Wear 

A talk at Gosforth Golf Club for the local Rotary Club was given by Regional Volunteer James Pasby.

17th September 2011 Rededication of Newton-on-the-Moor memorial, Northumberland 

Regional Volunteer Janet Brown represented War Memorials Trust at the rededication of the Newton-on-the-Moor war memorial in Northumberland.

A talk to Winlaton Local History Society was given by Regional Volunteer James Pasby.

12th September 2011 Regional Volunteer Day, Edinburgh

RV Day Edinburgh 2011 © WMT, 2011The second of two Regional Volunteer Days was held in Edinburgh and was attended by Trust Membership and Volunteer Officer, Nancy Treves, Trust Conservation Officer, Emma Nelson, and eight Regional Volunteers.

The content of both Days included reports on the success of the War Memorials Officer campaign, discussion about Regional Volunteer participation in the promotion of the In Memoriam 2014 project, brainstorming sessions about compiling listing applications for war memorials, evaluation of the new condition survey form and helpful hints for completing war memorial condition surveys and taking useful photographs to accompany the surveys.

6th September 2011 Regional Volunteer Day, Bristol

RV Day Bristol 2011 © WMT, 2011The first of two Regional Volunteer Days was held in Bristol and was attended by Trust Membership and Volunteer Officer, Nancy Treves, one of the Trust’s Conservation Officers, Emma Nelson, and the Trust’s new Learning Officer, Ruth Cavender, and 11 Regional Volunteers.

The content of both Days included reports on the success of the War Memorials Officer campaign, discussion about Regional Volunteer participation in the promotion of the In Memoriam 2014 project, brainstorming sessions about compiling listing applications for war memorials, evaluation of the new condition survey form and helpful hints for completing war memorial condition surveys and taking useful photographs to accompany the surveys.

War Memorials Trust had an information stand at Royal Military School Concert in the Park, Twickenham, London.

6th July 2011 In Memoriam 2014 reception, London

In Memoriam 2014 reception July 2011 © www.paulpickard.com courtsey of The SmartWater Foundation, 2011The In Memoriam 2014 project was introduced to a number of key partners in a soft launch at SmartWater’s new Centre for Infrastructure and Asset Protection in London. Those attending included representatives of the National Memorial Arboretum, English Heritage, Western Front Association, National Association of Memorial Masons as well as a number of staff from the Reserve Forces and Cadets Division of the Ministry of Defence.

In Memoriam 2014 aims to provide greater protection for war memorials in the UK by marking them, free of charge, with a forensic liquid called SmartWater which offers robust traceability should a theft occur. The In Memoriam 2014 website, www.inmemoriam2014.org, is active.

4th July 2011 AGM, London 

War Memorials Trust AGM 2011 © WMT, 2011On Monday 4th July War Memorials Trust AGM took place. Held at the Imperial War Museum, the event was attended by around 30 members who joined staff, Trustees and Area Vice-Patrons. 

Vice-Chairman of Trustees Peter McCormick reviewed the Trust’s activities over the last year in the absence of Chairman Algy Cluff, who unfortunately had to offer his apologies to the meeting. Treasurer Roger Bardell reported on the financial performance of the charity during 2010 and into 2011. He was followed by staff who delivered short presentations on key aspects of the Trust’s work. Frances Moreton spoke about Learning, War Memorials Officers and In Memoriam 2014, Nancy Treves discussed membership and Regional Volunteers, Emma Nelson highlighted some interesting conservation cases and Amy Davidson presented details of some of the grants awarded in 2010.

4th July 2011 Pre-AGM walk, London

War Memorials Trust pre-AGM walk 2011 © WMT, 2011Prior to the Trust AGM a walk took place.  Starting near Bond Street station, the walk progressed along Davies Street and towards Grosvenor Square. The Square is home to the American Embassy and has a 9/11 memorial, a World War II memorial to the Eagle Squadron and the new statue of Ronald Reagan, which had been unveiled that morning.

The group visited the Animals in War memorial at Brook Gate which presented an interesting opportunity for the Trust’s Conservation Officers to discuss some common conservation issues affecting war memorials such as pollution from surrounding traffic. Those attending the walk then had the opportunity to ask questions and discover more about how the Trust would encourage local communities to deal with these types of problems.

The group walked through Hyde Park, viewing the memorial to the 7/7 bombings on the way. At Hyde Park Corner, the group visited the memorial to the Napoleonic Wars, and finished by the Nelson Arch, after visiting the Royal Artillery memorial.

3rd July 2011 Rededication of Swaffham war memorial, Norfolk

22nd June 2011 Prestation to Leicestershire and Rutland War Memorial Project, Leicestershire 

Trust Membership and Volunteer Officer Nancy Treves gave a presentation at the launch of the Leicestershire and Rutland War Memorial Project in Leicestershire County Hall, Leicester.

18th June 2011 10th anniversary of Civil Defence memorial, Staffordshire

War Memorials Trust SLCC conference 2011 © WMT, 2011The Trust hosted its first conference in partnership with the Society of Local Council Clerks. The conference was held in Goole and the aim of the day was to provide guidance relating to the day-to-day management of war memorials under the custodianship of local councils. The day included exercises in undertaking condition surveys and producing maintenance plans.

25th-27th February 2011 Who Do You Think You Are? Live exhibition, London 

War Memorials Trust at Who Do You Think You Are? Live 2011 © WMT, 2011The Trust attended the family history exhibition which accompanies the successful BBC programme Who Do You Think You Are? Trust staff spent three days at London Olympia talking to some of the thousands of visitors about the charity. Our stand was ideally placed next to the Military Memorabilia Checkpoint and exhibition neighbours included Western Front Association and Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Visitors were able to access information held by family history societies as well as attend workshops.
