Conference history 1997-2009

Over the years War Memorials Trust has run conferences and workshops on a range of war memorial issues either independently or with partners. This page summaries some of those events. It includes events held for the Regional Volunteers for the charity from 2002-2009 when the role ended with the focus moving to War Memorials Online.

2009

Newcastle: Wednesday 2nd December

The second pair of conferences. Free to attend but a place had to be reserved.

  • Looking After War Memorials: The morning session was aimed at war memorial custodians or organisations with a local war memorial role. The issues covered included ownership and responsibility issues, conservation issues, funding and help available. A guest speaker from Newcastle City Council discussed their approach to war memorial custodianship.
  • War Memorial Conservation: The afternoon session was aimed at those who quote for or undertake work on war memorials. The event outlined the Trust's approach to conservation and provided an opportunity to discuss conservation issues. A guest speaker who has worked on a war memorial project grant funded by the Trust spoke about their project.

RV Day 2009

The 2009 RV Day was held on Monday 7th September at the Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill. Staff gave presentations on recent Trust activities, our conservation work, completing condition surveys, listing war memorials and the development of a new volunteer pack. In addition two Regional Volunteers, Mike Coyle and Tony Stubbs, gave presentations on the relocation of war memorials and researching the history of memorials.

2008

RV Day 2008

This meeting was held on Monday 8th September 2008 at the Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill and included staff presentations on subjects such as the re-registration of all RVs and the launch of the new website. In addition, Jon Wright of the Twentieth Century Society gave a talk about the work of the Society.

2007

RV Day 2007

The 2007 RV Day was held in the Tower Gallery at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds on Monday 10th September. The meeting included presentations by a number of RVs about individual projects and was followed by a fascinating tour of the museum by two of the Curators. 

2006

RV Day 2006

This meeting was held at the Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill on Friday 8th September 2006. Staff presentation topics included the BBC Radio 4 Charity Appeal, the relocation of stored war memorials and the lisitng of freestanding war memorials. We were also joined by Jennifer Flippance from the UK National Inventory of War Memorials who gave a talk about the work of the Inventory.

2005

RV Day 2005

The 2005 RV Day was on Friday 2nd September at the Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill. The meeting included discussions about the promotion of War Memorials Trust and a presentation about fundraising for the charity.

2004

RV Day 2004

This meeting was held in the Conference Room at the Imperial War Museum London on Thursday 1st July 2004 following the Trust's AGM. Topics discussed included the Trust's grant schemes, the sale of war memorials and the future of war memorials in redundant buildings.

2003

RV Day 2003

The RV Day 2003 was held at the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester on Saturday 27th September. The meeting included staff presentations about information distributed to RVs and how RVs can aid the conservation work of the Trust. The meeting was followed by a tour of the Museum.

2002

RV Day 2002

This meeting was held on Saturday 14th September 2002 in the Conference Room at the Imperial War Museum London. It included presentations from Meurig Jones, Co-ordinator of the Anglo-Boer War Memorials Project, about Boer war memorials and Dr Nicholas Saunders, from UCL, about trench art. The meeting was followed by a tour of the Museum.
